Body Tetris
Being out of shape sucks.
Getting in shape sucks.
But getting in shape isn’t just about your physical body—no, no, no—I’m talking about Body Tetris.
Your body, your mind, your spirit, your sense of drive, your desire to explore, your longing to find your purpose… it’s all connected. And it doesn’t really matter which piece you start with, because no matter where you begin, getting in shape sucks.
Not having the energy or drive to take care of yourself sucks even more—especially when it spirals into that infinite loop of tiredness, self-defeat, and lack of purpose.
Where I Start
Personally, my lazy ass starts with some pushups.
If I’m doing pushups consistently, the rest of me kind of starts to fall into place.
After a few days, I start wanting to be consistent with other things too. I used to rely on journaling to kickstart my momentum, but I realized I was doing too much writing and planning—and not enough pushups.
Not enough action. Not enough tangible progress.
Momentum > Motivation
It’s all about momentum.
Whether it’s fear, self-doubt, or (a big one for me) not knowing the exact next step—or second guessing it 10 times until your priorities shift—momentum is about getting out of your own way.
For so long, I felt stuck. Wasting my life.
And here’s the part no one tells you:
You can be doing amazing things—getting promotions, traveling, creating—and still feel like you’re standing still if you’re ignoring that one thing you really want to do.
When you’re stuck, self-destruction feels easier than self-discipline.
And just like positive momentum can carry you forward, negative momentum can drag you further from yourself too.
What Is Body Tetris?
Body Tetris is about how all the pieces of you fit together:
Your mind. Your body. Your spirit. Your goals. Your drive. That never-ending, overly important-sounding “purpose.”
You get to decide the mold you want to grow into.
It’s planned by you, set by you, and only activated by you.
Whether you choose to be progressive or degressive—yep, made that word up—it all comes down to one thing: you.
My Real-Life Tetris Chain
For me, it starts with pushups.
Pushups lead to planning.
Planning leads to believing in myself.
Believing in myself leads to writing reminders to keep believing in myself—and also to not forget what I planned in the first place.
If it weren’t so damn cold outside, I’d run more too. But hey—it’s winter in Iowa. So it is what it is.
…See what I just did there?
I made an excuse not to run.
Could I go to the gym?
Bundle up and brave the piercing cold?
Absolutely.
But here we are.
I’m getting in shape—in more ways than one.
And I promise you:
This shit sucks.
